History

History
Juntendo University is a comprehensive health university that offers students the opportunity to integratively study human health issues such as medicine, nursing, sports, health sciences, physical therapy, medical radiology, and international liberal arts. The origin of the university dates back to the late Edo period, in 1838, when university founder Taizen Sato established a school of Dutch medicine known as “Wadajuku” in Yagenbori, Edo (present-day Higashi Nihonbashi, Tokyo). This is why Juntendo University is the oldest Western medicine school in Japan still in operation. In the Edo period, excellent medical students from all over Japan gathered at Juntendo, and the school culture of not creating academic cliques remains unchanged to this very day. Juntendo University is an open-minded university that takes in outstanding talent and contributes to the development of society.

Academics

As a comprehensive health university, Juntendo University is engaged in the development and training of talent to support medical care, health, health sciences, and welfare. For this reason, we offer independent education based on the following pillars: pressure-free education in the process of human development; education that brings out the individuality of students; and education that encourages self-learning. We encourage active self-study by students as a form of learning that brings out their individuality and motivates them to study. We proactively conduct small-class education and small-group learning, and are making efforts to ensure that students naturally acquire autonomy and the desire to learn.

Research

Research
Juntendo University has a large-scale collaborative research facility within the university that enables everyone to use the latest research facilities and equipment necessary for conducting cutting-edge research. The facility has full-time dedicated staff to help solve technical problems in research. Users can take introductory courses as well as one-on-one courses on equipment that is difficult to operate, which enables them to conduct their research with peace of mind while gradually getting used to operating the equipment. This facility attracts researchers from a variety of fields, facilitating the exchange information beyond their respective fields of expertise and constantly sparking new ideas. A key feature is that users can help each other and advance their research through friendly competition, and obtain a doctorate degree in this open environment regardless of alma mater, department, or nationality.
