Overview

The Japan Studies Program is a unique opportunity for excellent short-term international exchange and fee-paying students, with a special welcome to international premed students.
The program offers academic learning, cultural immersion, and hands-on experiences in the heart of Tokyo.

Accommodation

Location

The program takes place at Juntendo University’s Faculty of International Liberal Arts, located in central Tokyo, offering easy access to cultural landmarks, academic resources, and vibrant city life.

Application and Enrollment Process

Be nominated by your home university
Students interested in participating in the Japanese Studies Program (JSP) should first contact Juntendo University or the international office at their home institution regarding the appropriate application procedure.
Applicants from partner institutions must be nominated by their home institution before applying to Juntendo University. Students who are not nominated by a partner university are not eligible to apply as exchange students.
Depending on the agreement with the home institution or the type of application, students may enroll in one or more of the following programs:
  • Japanese Studies Program (JSP)– courses taught in English
  • Liberal Arts Program (LAP)– courses taught in English and Japanese
  • Japanese Language and Culture Studies Program (JLCSP)– Japanese language and culture courses for students who have completed at least one year of university-level Japanese language study or the equivalent
Although each partner institution has its own selection criteria, applicants are expected to satisfy the language, academic, and financial requirements described below.
English Proficiency Requirement
Students who wish to enroll in JSP courses or English-taught courses in the Liberal Arts Program (LAP) must demonstrate English language proficiency by meeting one of the following requirements:
  • CEFR B2 or higher
  • TOEFL iBT 72 or higher (tests taken before January 21, 2026)
  • TOEFL iBT Band Score 4.0 or higher (tests taken on or after January 21, 2026)
  • IELTS Academic 5.5 or higher
Applicants whose native language is English are exempt from submitting English language test scores.
Applicants whose most recent six years of formal education were conducted entirely in English may also be exempt. Official documentation from the home institution may be requested.
Japanese Language Requirement
Students who wish to enroll in Japanese-taught courses in the Liberal Arts Program (LAP) should demonstrate sufficient Japanese language proficiency by meeting one of the following requirements:
  • JLPT N2 or higher
  • EJU Japanese (excluding Writing): 200 points or higher
Students who wish to enroll in the Japanese Language and Culture Studies Program (JLCSP) should have completed at least one year of university-level Japanese language study or the equivalent.
Academic Requirement
Applicants should:
  • Be enrolled as full-time students at their home institution.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Meet any academic requirements established by their home institution.
Students should consult their home institution regarding eligibility for nomination.
Financial Requirement
Applicants are required to submit financial documents as part of the online application.
For the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), applicants should demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support their stay in Japan.
As a guideline, applicants should be able to demonstrate financial support of at least:
  • JPY 600,000 for one semester
  • JPY 1,200,000 for one academic year
Financial documents may include a bank balance certificate, scholarship certificate, or other proof of financial support.
Nomination Deadline
For applicants from partner institutions, nominations should be submitted by:
  • April 15 for the Fall Semester, beginning in late September
  • October 15 for the Spring Semester, beginning in early April
Please note that course registration information will only be shared with accepted students.
Submit the Online Application
After eligibility has been confirmed, applicants will receive detailed instructions for the online application.
Applicants will be asked to submit documents including:
  • Application Form
  • Passport copy
  • Official Academic Transcript
  • English and/or Japanese language proficiency documents, if applicable
  • Financial documents
  • Passport-style photograph
  • Other documents required for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Application Deadline
For applicants from partner institutions, applications must be submitted by:
  • May 1 for the Fall Semester
  • November 1 for the Spring Semester
Applicants applying through other admission routes will be informed of the applicable application schedule separately.
Register for Courses
Accepted students will receive information regarding course registration after admission.
Please note:
  • Course offerings vary each semester.
  • Registration is subject to prerequisites, class capacity, and timetable availability.
  • Enrollment in specific courses cannot be guaranteed.
  • Students must meet the language requirements for the courses they wish to take.
  • Students are expected to register for at least seven class periods per week to comply with Student Visa requirements.

All incoming exchange students are required to participate in the orientation program before the start of classes.

Academic credits are awarded upon successful completion of each course.

Official Transcript
An official transcript will be issued approximately eight (8) weeks after the completion of the program (following the final examination period).For students from partner institutions, the official transcript will be sent directly to the home institution by email.
Students from non-partner institutions will receive their official transcript according to the procedures communicated by Juntendo University.
Credit transfer and grade conversion are determined by the student's home institution or sponsoring institution, where applicable.
