Application Eligibility
All applicants must have met or expect to meet one of the eligibility requirements listed below by September 30, 2023.
(1) Currently residing in Japan and have not obtained permanent residence for Japan
*Those with the status of “Permanent Resident,” “Spouse or Child of a Japanese National,” “Spouse or Child of a Permanent Resident,” “Long-Term Resident,” or “Special Permanent Resident” fall under the general entrance examination, not the entrance examination for international applicants.
(2) After admission, applicant will be able to obtain residence status (student) as an international student of Juntendo University

(2) After admission, applicant will be able to obtain residence status (student) as an international student of Juntendo University
(Security Export Control in Japan)
In accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, which seeks to protect both national and international peace and security, Juntendo University has established the Juntendo University Security Export Control Regulations to preserve academic and research activities. International students accepted into the graduate school program should consult with their supervising professor about their research prior to submitting the application because there are cases where students have to modify their application due to the research. International students accepted into the graduate school program must sign a pledge indicating they will comply with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act at the time of their enrollment.

*2 Preliminary Eligibility Review
Applicants who wish to apply to the Graduate School based on the application requirements listed in 7. (4) or 8. will first be reviewed by the Graduate School Committee as to whether they meet the eligibility requirements before they apply.
Applicants seeking a preliminary eligibility review must submit all of the following documents to the address listed below. An applicant will only be able to undertake the application procedures if their eligibility to apply is approved.

- Graduated from the department of medicine of a faculty of medicine or from a faculty of dentistry in Japan
- Completed a six-year curriculum in the study of pharmacology or veterinary science at a university in Japan
- Completed 18 years of formal education outside of Japan

a) Applicants must have graduated from an institution certified by a government or accreditation institution outside of Japan that reviews academic and research activities, or that has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) (Foreign University Branches (Graduate School Equivalent) in Japan Designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).
b) Applicants who have graduated from a distance learning course administered by a school outside of Japan while living in Japan or from an international school in Japan, whose curriculum corresponds to a country outside of Japan and was designated in the preceding issue (Foreign University Branches in Japan Designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) are also qualified to apply. - Approved by MEXT [Ministry of Education Notification No. 39 of April 8, 1955]
(1) Applicants who have studied medicine or dentistry at a university’s faculty of medicine or dentistry under the old University Ordinance (Edict No. 388 of 1918) and have graduated from such a faculty
(2) Applicants who have graduated from the National Defense Medical College under the Act for Establishment of the Ministry of Defense (Act No. 164 of 1954)
(3) Applicants who have completed a master’s course or a professional graduate school course under Article 99, Paragraph 2 of the School Education Act (Act No. 26 of 1947), applicants who are eligible to receive a master’s degree, applicants who have been enrolled in a doctoral course for 2 years or more without any division between the first 2 years and the second 3 years, have acquired at least 30 credits, and have received the necessary research guidance (including those who fall under Article 6 (1) of the Degree Regulations (Ministry of Education ordinance No. 9 of 1953) prior to revision by the Ministerial Ordinance Partially Revising the Degree Regulations (Ministry of Education ordinance No. 29 of 1974)), and who are recognized by a graduate school or major as having academic ability equivalent or superior to a person who has graduated from a course to study medicine, a course to study dentistry, or a course to study pharmacology at a university which is mainly intended to cultivate practical clinical ability, or a course to take veterinary medicine at a university
(4) Applicants who have graduated from a university (excluding medical courses, dental courses, pharmacological courses whose main purpose is to cultivate practical clinical abilities, and veterinary courses) or who have been engaged in research for 2 years or longer at a university, research institute, etc., after completing a 16-year course in school education in a foreign country, and who are recognized by a graduate school or major as having, based on the results of said research, etc., academic ability equivalent or superior to a person who has graduated from a course to study medicine, a course to study dentistry, or a course to study pharmacology at a university which is mainly intended to cultivate practical clinical ability, or a course to take veterinary medicine at a university

Entrance Examination for International Applicants (Excludes Those with Permanent Residency in Japan)
In addition to the above eligibility requirements, applicants must meet the following two conditions.(1) Currently residing in Japan and have not obtained permanent residence for Japan

Entrance Examination for International Applicants Living Abroad (Pre-arrival Admission Scheme)
In addition to meeting the above eligibility requirements, applicants who meet both conditions below will take an oral examination over the internet, based on which a decision on admission will be made, without the need for the applicant to travel to Japan.(1) Currently living outside Japan and who do not hold Japanese citizenship
(2) After admission, applicant will be able to obtain residence status (student) as an international student of Juntendo University

- Tuition (annual) and expenses for each academic year are as above.
- Reimbursement of enrolment fee for declining enrollees: Accepted applicants who later wish to decline their admission must submit a specified written notification of their intention by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2023 to have the fees paid, less the Matriculation Fee, reimbursed.
- Matriculation scholarships: Applicants who have graduated from a Juntendo University undergraduate or graduate program, have completed the Juntendo University Initial Clinical Training Program, who work full time for Juntendo University (at the time of the entrance examination), or who have worked as full-time teachers at a Juntendo-affiliated hospital within one year before enrollment may qualify for a JPY 100,000 matriculation scholarship, upon consideration of their academic performance, work experience, work performance, and other factors.
- Tuition installment payments: Enrolled students who are unable to pay their tuition and other costs by the deadline may apply to pay these expenses in up to two installments in principle, if they submit a letter of request for payment by installment, stating their reasons. (However, the Matriculation Fee must be paid by the deadline.)
Financial Support
- Graduate students who hold a medical license and who have engaged in clinical duties at a hospital affiliated with Juntendo University will be paid a salary (based on University regulations; day/night on-call allowances paid separately)
- Self-funded international students may be eligible to receive a scholarship to mitigate their financial burden, pending a review of their financial circumstances.
- Self-funded international students who have enrolled through the Entrance Examination for International Students Living Abroad (Pre-arrival Admission Scheme) and who meet certain other requirements, including separately established academic achievement and income levels, may apply for the grant scholarship, Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students
- The Research Assistant (RA) program is designed to enhance and strengthen research assistance frameworks and develop research pursuit capabilities in young researchers. It is a good opportunity for graduate students to raise the standard of their own research activities. If accepted, a salary will be paid based on hours worked, commensurate with performance. (As of March 31, 2022)
(*RA employment decisions are subject to the formal approval of the University. Various conditions apply, including evaluations by lecturers and students during the period of employment.) - Juntendo University nominates international students for scholarships with JASSO.
- There are many research funding assistance programs available for the development of young researchers, including project research funding and the University President’s Special Joint Project Research Funds.
- Students attached to endowed chairs may be eligible for scholarships and other benefits at the discretion of the senior professor of that chair. However, as with the RA program, these are also subject to the formal approval of the University.
