- Mid to long term residents in Japan who are not able to accomplish all their intended purposes before their period of stay expires may apply for an extension.
- The Immigration Services Agency of Japan accepts the Application for Extension of Period of Stay as early as 3 months prior to the period of stay expires.
Procedures - Residence Status: Student
- Juntendo University International Center will send students an email from the online system SpeedVisa.
- Confirm the email and agree to use SpeedVisa. Create a password and enter personal information.
- Enter the following information into SpeedVisa.
- Personal Information
- Academic and employment history
- Application for Extension of Period of Stay necessary information
- Reason for studying in Japan
- Explanation for how the student expects to pay for the tuition
- Upload the following documents to SpeedVisa:
- Passport (page that contains personal information)
- Residence card (both sides)
- Personal photo
- Transcript (First year students - transcript from the school most recently attended)
- Enrollment certificate (First year students - admission certificate is acceptable)
- Document explaining how the student expects to defray their expenses, such as a bank account statement or scholarship certificate. A copy of a bank book must include all transactions from the last year. The document must be in either English or Japanese.
- Juntendo University International Center (JUIC) will review and confirm the information inputted and uploaded to SpeedVisa. Once confirmed JUIC will inform students of the time to come to JUIC to receive the Application for Extension of Period of Stay
- Bring the following items to JUIC.
- All items uploaded to SpeedVisa
- Passport
- Residence card
- Personal Photo
- Submit the required items to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
- Each application requires a ¥4,000 revenue stamp. Certificate for Payment of Fee form
- If necessary submit the Notification of Accepting Organization too.
- Immigration Services Agency of Japan may take 2 weeks to 1 month to review the application.
- The Immigration Services Agency of Japan may request additional items not listed on the required items list.
- When the Immigration Services Agency of Japan completes the review they will send you a postcard telling you to pick up your new residence card.
- Log into your SpeedVisa account, upload a copy of the front and back of your residence card, and register the following information found on your residence card: residence card number, period of stay, date of expiration, and residence status.

- Complete the Application for Extension of Period of Stay For applicant parts
- Gather the "Cultural Activities" Required Items, below
- Submit the Application for Extension of Period of Stay For applicant parts to Juntendo University International Center (JUIC).
- Submit the required items to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
- Each application requires a ¥4,000 revenue stamp Certificate for Payment of Fee form
- Immigration Services Agency of Japan may take 2 weeks to 1 month to review the application.
- The Immigration Services Agency of Japan may request additional items not listed on the required items list.
- When the Immigration Services Agency of Japan completes the review they will send you a postcard telling you to pick up your new residence card may take 2 weeks to 1 month to review the application.
