Visa procedures are dependent on:
- Length of stay - short term stays (90 days or less) and mid to long term stay (90 days or more).
- Residence status - every status outlines a set of activities that may be engaged in.
Length of stay
Short Term Stay
- Temporary visitors are those people who will stay in Japan for 90 days or less.
- Applicants will need to apply for a Visa at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their country.
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) lists countries whose nationals have visa exemption arrangements with Japan.
Mid to Long Term Stay
- Mid to long term residents in Japan are those people who will stay in Japan more than 90 days.
- Potential mid to long residents in Japan will need to apply for and acquire a Certificate of Eligibility before applying for a visa.
- Certificate of Eligibility applications correspond with a residence status.
- After acquiring a Certificate of Eligibility, applicants will need to apply for a visa at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their country.
- Mid to long term residents will receive a residence card at their port of entry.
- Mid to long term residents in Japan will need to go to the Municipal Office of the ward they will live in within 14 days of their arrival in Japan to submit a Notification (Change) of Place of Residence, which will also need to be completed when moving within Japan and when leaving Japan.
Residence Statuses
“Student”
- Juntendo University international students who attend an undergraduate or graduate program at Juntendo University may need to acquire a “student” residence status.
- Many scholarships require a “student” residence status.
- “Student” residence status holders must complete the Immigration Services Agency of Japan’s Part-time Student Employment procedures if they wish to have a part time job.
- Length: 4 years and 3 months, 4 years, 3 years and 3 months, 3 years, 2 years and 3 months, 2 years, 1 year and 3 months, 1 year, 6 months, and 3 months
“Artist / Cultural Activities”
- Juntendo University international Cooperating Researchers may need to acquire an “Artist / Cultural Activities” residence status.
- “Artist / Cultural Activities” residence status holders must engage in academic activities that provide no income and are for the purpose of learning and acquiring skills under the guidance of a Juntendo University professor.
- Length: 2 years, 1 year, and 6 months
“Professor / Instructor”
- Juntendo University international faculty may need to acquire a “Professor / Instructor” residence status.
- “Professor / Instructor” residence status holders may have a paid position.
- Length: 3 years or 1 year
